Anyone who is following the full range of Marvel titles might be able to piece together who I am referring to, but then if you read the first few pages of this comic they actually name the character in question. I however was having a metaphorical ‘blond’ moment and it went right over my head. This comic is very similar to a lot of the Uncanny X-Men storylines, which feels right as they are now both working from the same base, in that it shows the team going off in search of a mutant who has appeared and needs to be rescued. The team is ‘dropped’ in by Magik; who now appears to have the sole job of acting as a glorified Star Trek teleporter or occasional executioner with that enormous sword; and it immediately goes bad. Appearing right in the middle of a laser gun fight is only not a fatally flawed plan if you happen to be accompanied by Ms. Insubstantial, Kitty Pryde. This comic is absolutely gorgeous to look at and I do not just mean Jean and Magik. Every panel is meticulously drawn, the action scenes feel fast and active, there is directional lighting all throughout the comic done as well as I could ask for and there is a sensible use of ‘special effects’ like motion blur. Basically this is the book I will put in front of people whenever I want to explain what ‘comic’ art should look like for me. It is not perfect, something that is produced at the rate of about 2 pages per day is never going to be hung on someone’s wall, but it is as good as I have seen in a long time; there are a couple of clunky panels where peoples feet do not quite touch the floor or Kitty’s head is too small for her body, but I am really having to look for them.
