This is a collection of the first three titles in The Descent Series, which are gritty urban fantasy books about a demon hunter's battles against the forces of Heaven and Hell.

Books included
1. Death's Hand
2. The Darkest Gate
3. Dark Union

DEATH'S HAND
Elise Kavanagh doesn't want to hunt demons anymore. It's been five years since she killed her last enemy, and life has been pretty good since then. She went to college. Got a job, and then lost it. Made a friend or two. Lived a normal life.

Now her former partner, a powerful witch named James Faulkner, wants Elise to fight one more time. The daughter of a coven member has been possessed, and Elise is the only exorcist nearby.

Doing the hero thing again would mean risking discovery by old enemies. But digging into the case reveals that it might already be too late--bodies are disappearing, demons slither through the night, and the cogs of apocalypse are beginning to turn. Some enemies aren't willing to let the secrets of the past stay dead...

THE DARKEST GATE
When Elise Kavanagh retired from demon hunting, she swore it would be permanent. But an attack from a powerful necromancer forced her back into the business, and now she's trying to balance her normal boyfriend and normal job with everything supernatural.

Mr. Black is a demon hunter gone rogue. He's enslaving angels and stealing ethereal artifacts in pursuit of forbidden immortality, and an old grudge drives him to make his final stand in Elise's territory. Destroying her life and killing her friends isn't the goal, but it's a definite perk.

A demonic overlord offers to join against Mr. Black and protect Elise's loved ones. All she needs to do is ally with the demons she's sworn to kill, at the cost of her morals--and maybe her immortal soul. But once she crosses that line, there's no turning back.

Nothing is sacred when Heaven and Hell collide on Earth...

DARK UNION
Every fifty years, the most powerful ethereal and infernal beings convene on Earth to resolve conflicts with mediation by kopides--humans born to police relations between Heaven and Hell. They're meeting in Elise Kavanagh's territory this year, and she used to be the greatest kopis in the world. But she's not invited.

An old friend, Lucas McIntyre, asks her to attend the summit in his place. But when she arrives, she discovers that a human faction called The Union has taken charge of the summit, and they're not playing nice. Worse yet, someone has killed a prominent Union member... and now they're demanding blood.

I read the reviews to this three book collection before I decided on getting them. After seeing some of the reviews I almost left this book (well all three) behind and moved on to look at something else. Despite my hesitation I decided to go ahead and get it, why not its free right?

Well it surprised me. I found myself flying through the pages and enjoying the story much more than I thought I would. Many people complain about the jumping back and forth between the present and the past, but I had didn't have that problem. The time jumps are clearly stated and happen only with a new chapter, it's not like it just changes all of a sudden. I would have been disappointed if I didn't get the glimpses from Elise's past. The past explains the present, both are important and in my opinion the jumps are well done.

The romance that simmers in the air is fun and complicated, which is exactly what it should be in a story such as this. I love how the romance is down played and the action never seems to stop. The past gives you just enough information to enjoy the present, but leaves you guessing and interested in what will happen next.

I will be continuing this series, and hope to dabble with some of the other stories that this author has written.

The Descent Series Books 13 Death Hand The Darkest Gate and Dark Union edition by SM Reine Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

The story is intriguing and fun. It's hard to find decent female protagonist in urban fantasies that aren't *shudder* paranormal romances. The books are short (novellas, really) but as one volume make a good book. They seem like early career writing. That is an assumption on my part; I haven't yet looked up much information about the author. So to me, it seems like a good beginning that can be built upon and fleshed out with experience.

While I do like the book, the editing is horrendous. Mostly its misspellings or words that have been left out or simply don't belong. It's often enough that it jars me out of reading. Let me be clear, I got this volume for free. One could argue that beggars cannot be choosers. But I have noticed that ebooks from (mobi format being my only regular eBook use) generally have this problem. So much so that I am going to have to consider testing other formats. wants to be king of book distributing. They probably need to acquire editors who have more than an elementary education. Or they could mention editing concerns to the publishers so they can be fixed. What would be really cool is if had a way for you to give editing feedback and make changes.

So I'd recommend buying a physical copy and enjoying the series that way. Actual hard copy is usually better edited.
These 3 free books ending up costing me a fair amount of money. I typically read the free samples of a series and then move on to another. Not this time. After the first 3, I was hooked! And then I learned that it wasn't just this series. There are multiple series that all link in together and I just could not let it go.

It starts with the Descent series, which is 7 books long. After it is over, we follow the same characters into the Ascension Series, which is 7 books long as well. As I was reading the Ascension Series I started recognizing some of the "new" characters. I realized that it was pulling in the characters from the Seasons of the Moon series (4 books) but I was getting a bit confused. It had been awhile since I had read Seasons of the Moon but things didn't line up. Turns out, Seasons of the Moon was followed by the Cain Chronicles (7 books) and the Ascension Series came after the Cain Chronicles.

I highly recommend these books but I would start with Seasons of the Moon and then the Cain Chronicles before starting the Descent Series. Once you read the Descent Series, you are not going to want to take a break before starting the Ascension Series so get the others out of the way first. They are great reads as well. Seasons of the Moon seemed to be more of a teen/young adult series to me whereas the rest have more adult themes but it's really good.

These books have demons, werewolves, witches, angels, hunters and more. There is some love story involved but it definitely takes a backseat to the action. I read a lot of fantasy and these books brought in demons and lore that I have never heard of. Typically when that happens, the demons are pretty cheesy and the lore is too far out there but that is not the case here. I loved the world that this opened up.

As I mentioned earlier, I don't pay for kindle books. I bought every one of these (except the free ones, of course) and would buy more if they came out.
This series frustrated me. There simply isn't enough world building to help you understand the 'why' of these characters. From what I read this is the first books in a long series so I was expecting enough world building so that this 'world' made some sense. Some of the characters' history is told throughout the book, but not enough to provide real understanding of the motivations. What is the Treaty of Dis? Why does Elise kill demons and Angels? Who is 'HE'? What happened to her when she was 16? How does the rest of the world cope with demons and witches? Are the 'normals' not aware these entities exist? I was left frustrated because I wanted to understand more and there simply wasn't enough information. It was also extremely frustrating that Elise, who is the greatest demon hunter of her time, could make so many stupid decisions. Ugh. So annoying. There were times when I had to just shake my head and exclaim out loud 'What? That's just f-ing dumb!'
